Relax Nkateko Mhlongo was born on 16 February 1978 at Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, Johannesburg. She was the cherished eldest child of Mr Ruel Mhlongo and Mrs Rose Ndhlovu. Relax’s life was one marked by remarkable strength, boundless love and an unwavering commitment to those she held dear.

Relax began her educational journey at Shalamuka Primary School and later attended Mandondo High School in Belfast Village. As a gifted and bright student, she was promoted through grades ahead of her peers, completing her matriculation at the tender age of 16. Despite her academic excellence and the promise of higher education, Relax was forced to pause her academic ambitions to care for her beloved mother, who was unwell, and to support her two siblings.

In addition to her family responsibilities, Relax was a dedicated Sunday School teacher at Calvary Baptist Church. Recognising her extraordinary talents, the church community provided invaluable support, offering food and other necessities to ease the financial burden on Relax and her family - a kindness for which they will always be grateful.

Relax’s professional journey began at Karos Hotel and continued with stints at Move n Pick and Protea Hotels, before finding her final and most beloved role as Reservations Manager at Kruger Gate Hotel. It was here that she truly shone, becoming an integral part of the team.

“Relax was more than just a valued member of our team, she was a Woman of Valour, a guiding light to all who had the privilege of knowing her. To us, she was not only a consummate professional, dedicated to ensuring every guest experience was seamless and memorable but also a motherly presence who cared deeply for those around her. Outside of work, Relax’s heart was always focused on serving others. She was a deeply spiritual woman who constantly reminded us of our responsibility to uplift our communities. In her free time, she gave of herself tirelessly to those less fortunate, embodying compassion and generosity in every aspect of her life. Relax’s passing leaves a profound void in our team and in the lives of so many who were touched by her kindness and unwavering commitment. While we grieve this tremendous loss, we are also deeply grateful for the years we were privileged to share with her.”

To Relax, family was not defined by blood alone. She embraced and nurtured those around her, offering both financial and emotional support to many who crossed her path. Her generosity, compassion and selflessness were the cornerstones of her character. She will be remembered not only for the love she shared with her own family but also for the countless lives she touched as an advocate for others.

A woman of diverse interests, Relax was also a passionate sports fan, a die-hard Kaizer Chiefs supporter and an avid Springbok enthusiast. Her curiosity extended beyond sports, as she took a keen interest in current affairs, health matters and the written word, excelling in her essays during her school years, always earning A-grades.

Relax’s larger-than-life personality, her warmth and her unshakable spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, kindness and service to others will live on in the hearts of all she touched.

Relax is survived by her sister and brother, who were the centre of her world, and a vast network of family and friends whose lives she enriched.

As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary woman, we also celebrate the many gifts she shared with us. Rest in peace, Relax Nkateko Mhlongo. You will forever be in our hearts.
